Saint Nicholas Cathedral

In the Orthodox Church every Bishop is supposed to have a cathedral. Mine is Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Washington DC. This is the parish which supported me while I was in the seminary. Although I no longer know many of the people there, a core of faithful supporters still exists there. And there are new people who know about me one way or another.

Before I returned to Washington DC from Texas, I was advised not to go to St. Nicholas Cathedral because "It is too Russian and you won't be happy there." I ended up there after a short time at another church and I knew almost immediately that I was at home, especially when Tom Rayfield came up and greeted me. He remembered me from my Byzantine Catholic days. I quickly made new friends and a few weeks later decided to become a member.

At the time the requirement to become a member is that one needed two sponsors. This took me almost five minutes to find two sponsors and complete the paper work. The late Pat Shaw was one. I don't remember who the other was.

I was invited to Washington the day I took these photographs and just had dinner with Deacon Patrick. Then I spent some time at the office with Deacon Sergius and Lisa. During this time I learned a little more about the history and status of the parish and also more about liturgics.
