Every year I make sure that I attend the Russian Festival and the Greek Festivals at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation and at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. I do not think that I have missed since moving to Baltimore. I also try to get to the one at St. Demetrius Greek Orthodox Church, but if I do not have a car, I cannot get there.
I consider attending the Festivals so important that although a few years ago I was moving on the same weekend of the Festival, I still attend for a few hours on Sunday afternoon. A few weeks later a co-worker asked me if I also attended the African-American Heritage Festival that weekend and I say no. He could not understand how I could attend the Greek Festival and not attend the other one. I shared this story with an older black male and he commented that there is nothing for me at the African-American Heritage Festival and, frankly, I agree with him.
But why the Greek Festival? If nothing else, I share the same faith and I have served in their temples many times. I have never served in a black church and I do not see doing so since they are not in communion with us. What a person believes is important and it should not be based on the color of his skin, but on the Truth and the Orthodox Church has the fullness of the Truth.
At the Festival I had a conversation with one woman and I was able to answer her questions. The answers which I gave would had been the same answer that the Greek priest would had given. Our words might had been different, but the answer would had been the same.
It was also wonderful to be able to spend some time with people whom I know from other churches. I spent some time talking with the people from the Greek Independence Day Parade and I'm looking forward to next year's Parade.
Please enjoy the photographs and I hope that I will see you there at the Festival next year, but meanwhile, be sure to come to the Russian Festival this year 19-21 October 2008 at Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. I also hope to see you at the Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation.
