Theophany (Epiphany) 2008

The highlight of Theophany for me this year was the blessing of the creek near our property in Elkridge. I had trouble getting there and back because I was wearing the wrong shoes for the trip. Other than that, it was a joyous day.

We had Vigil the previous evening. I had expected to be late since I leave work at 18:00 and Vigil was scheduled to start at 18:00. But we closed the office at 17:00. This gave me an hour to get there and it takes only 30 minutes at most from the office. Traffic was not an issue this day.

The next morning we had Liturgy with the Great Blessing of Water. This was my first time as a deacon for this service. The Great Blessing of Water took place at the end of the Liturgy. Then we had brunch. Most of the people left. The Vass family and I then went down to bless the creek. This was mainly in Slavonic, but I also did parts in English.

Then I returned later that evening for Vespers. Both Fr. John and I were exhausted by now.

Besides the beautiful services, I was also moved by the beauty of the land. I hope to come back again one day before the leaves start to come out and take photographs and then come back after the leaves are here and take more photographs.

For the blessing of the creek, I asked Matushka Tatiana to take photos with my Nikon D50. I showed her how to use it and within a few minutes she was having a blast with the camera. Now we think that she wants to get the same camera. I think that she now sees why I love my Nikon D50 so much.
