Maslenitsa and Happy 80th Birthday
In the West the days between the Sunday before Lent and Ash Wednesday are known as Mardi Gras, "Fat Tuesday." Historically this was the last days that one could eat meat until Easter. Today the Catholic Church lost that fast for the most part.
In the East the day before Great Lent has several names, one of which is Maslenitsa. It is the last day on which we eat dairy products. The previous Sunday was the last day on which we eat meat.
This year at Holy Trinity not only did we celebrate Maslenitsa, but we also honored three members of our parish who are celebrating their 80th birthday this year. The Lymans Dancers entertained us as they help us to honor Mary, Olga, and Sue.
Also, this is known as Last Judgement Sunday and Cheesefare Sunday and Forgiveness Sunday. After the celebration, we had the Forgiveness Vespers with the mutual rite of forgiveness. It is a beautiful service and it is a shame that most people do not participate. I look forward to this service every year.
