Chess Training

P-K4 is no longer a valid chess notation. Now I have to learn the new method which makes much less sense to me. But this was why we had the training on Saturday 12 January. The trainaing was originally scheduled for Saturday 5 January but had to be postponed.

During the training we learned a little about strategy and we had a couple of exercises. One was to place the black king, white king, and white rook on specific squares and we had 30 moves in which to checkmate the black king. Another excercise was to line up the pawns in their normal position for one color and select one knight and one bishop for the other color and the goal was to get at least one pawn to the other end. This seems to be quite easy.

The chess program is a part of a State grant. It has been learned that when children play chess, they also tend to be better in school. Chess teaches them to think and to analyze the situation. "Pawn Master," aka David Mcduffie, was very clear that our brain is in our head and not in our hand and therefore we should leave our hand away from the piece as we analyze the move.

We were also treated to a simultaneous exhibition by Sophia, our other instructor. We also had a visit from Kirk Williams, the president of the Maryland Chess Federation, and he will be one of our instructors also.
